Humility – True or False?

HUMILITY -TRUE OR FALSE?

In our blog this week I would like to put out a test of your views on humility.  The quiz is centered on Christ-like humility verses traditional humility. We will answer each question with scriptures to see if these statements are true or false.

Humility Test-  True or False?

#1- Humble people should not confront others?

#2- For the most part to be humble means you should be poor financially?

#3- A humble person has no pride?

#4- Humility is not one of Jesus’ most important virtues?

#5- Humble people are generally insecure?

Many answers to our test can be found in observing Jesus’ life and ministry. Jesus said Come unto Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light (Matthew 11:28-30).

HUMILITY TEST ANSWERS

#1 Humble people should not confront others. False! Look at Jesus life! He was humble yet confronted two types of people: religious leaders and hypocrites.  Very rarely did he confront sinners though. But just the opposite, He was called a friend of sinners (see Matthew 11:19).

#2 For most part to be humble means you should be poor financially.  False! By humility and fear[Hebrew: reverence]of the Lord are riches, honor, and life(Proverbs 22:4). In this verse according to King Solomon humility brings riches, not poverty.  Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy(1 Timothy 6:17). If we can live in humility apart from arrogance regarding wealth then it is God’s desire to give you richly all things to enjoy. Psalm 35:27 says:…Let the Lord be magnified, who has pleasure in the prosperity of His servants.

#3- A humble person should have no pride.  False! There is a major difference between pride and arrogance verses pride rooted in humility.  Pride rooted in arrogance is full of self. Whereas pride rooted in humility is a good trait. In 2 Corinthians 11:30 & 12: 5, 9 the Apostle Paul boasted in his sufferings or beatings and persecution for Christ.  Romans 2:17 and Psalms 34: 2 talks about boasting in God. In the epistles Paul boasted about some of his colleagues in Gospel. Revelation 7:9-12 talks of all the nations and tribes in heaven worshipping the Lamb.  I believe pride in your culture or who God made you to be, your family, friends and our God is good godly pride as long as it is rooted in humility.

#4- Humility is not one of Jesus’ most important virtues. False! Look again at what Jesus claimed He was in Matthew 11:29, humble. No where else does He make such a profound statement to tell us what He is, other than to say I AM HUMBLE and MEEK.  Psalms 138:6 says Though the Lord is high, yet He regards the lowly; but the proud He knows from afar.James 4:8 in the context of humility says Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. The best way according to James 4: 6-10 to draw near to God is by having humility.

#5 Humble people are generally insecure.  False! When pride comes, then comes shame; but with the humble is wisdom (Proverbs 11:2). Pride and arrogance brings with it shame and insecurity. Humility brings with it honor, confidence and authority. Jesus who is humility in it’s purest form was not insecure.  Look at Jesus example and notice how many times the religious leaders and people said what great authority He had. Jesus had tremendous confidence and authority.  We need to follow in His footsteps.
